Acceptable use policy

Last updated August 7, 2026

This policy forms part of the terms of service. Two subjects really matter: do not use a firearm detector to watch a person, and do not summon an emergency response you do not need. Everything else here supports one of those.

Contents and other documents

1.What the service is for

Detecting visible firearms at premises you own, occupy, or are authorized to protect, so that people you designate learn about it quickly. Every other use is outside what this product is sold for, and several are prohibited outright below.

This policy binds you, your staff, your contractors, anyone you give access to, and any agency you link to your organization. Breaking it is a breach of the terms of service.

2.Lawful camera placement and notice

Where your cameras point is your decision and your liability. Two rules apply everywhere, whatever your jurisdiction says.

Not where people expect privacy. Bathrooms, locker rooms, changing areas, medical examination rooms, nursing rooms, residential interiors you do not occupy, or anywhere else a reasonable person would not expect a camera. This holds even where recording there would be technically lawful.

Notice and consent are yours to give. Signage, employee notification, student and parent notification, union and works-council consultation, and recording consent vary by state and by the kind of premises you operate. Several states treat audio differently from video; this system processes no audio, and whether your cameras do is your question to answer. We do not advise on any of it and cannot determine it for you.

3.Prohibited uses

You may not:

  • Watch a particular person. Use the service to monitor, follow, or build a record of an identified individual: an employee, a student, a tenant, a family member, or anyone else. This system reports that a firearm is visible at a place. It is not a tool for surveilling a person, and configuring it as one is a breach of this policy regardless of who owns the cameras.
  • Attempt identity matching. Run face recognition, biometric analysis, or any identification technique against frames or exports obtained from the service, or attempt to correlate people across incidents. The product does not do this, and you may not do it downstream either.
  • Use it to discriminate or harass. Direct coverage, thresholds, or response at people because of race, religion, national origin, disability, sex, gender identity, or any other protected characteristic, or use an incident record to intimidate or retaliate against someone.
  • Present it as a life-safety system or as prevention. Do not describe it to staff, students, parents, tenants, insurers, or a board as preventing an attack, as guaranteeing detection, or as a substitute for calling emergency services. It detects firearms visible to a camera, it cannot detect concealed weapons, and detection is not prevention.
  • Operate without required notice or consent, or point cameras where lawful placement says you may not.
  • Resell or repackage the service, provide access to a third party as a monitoring offering of your own, or scrape, bulk-export, or mirror the product without a written agreement.
  • Defeat the camera-suitability rating to inflate coverage. Cameras excluded during setup cannot resolve any weapon class at their working distance, and a camera rated for rifles only will not report handguns. Presenting an excluded camera as covered, to an insurer, a board, or your own staff, misrepresents what is protected.

4.System integrity

Do not attempt to bypass authentication, forge appliance or webhook traffic, tamper with the audit log, reuse or manipulate signed media links, or degrade the service for other customers. Do not reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the detector or its weights, probe it adversarially to find what it misses, or publish a benchmark of it without our written consent. A published figure that came from a handful of staged frames is a claim about a safety product that neither of us can stand behind.

5.Panic and dispatch

Panic activation and dispatch requests are for genuine emergencies. Deliberately causing an emergency response without cause endangers the people who respond and the people at the address, is a criminal offence in most jurisdictions, and is grounds for immediate termination without refund.

You are responsible for false-alarm fines, permit requirements, and registration where your jurisdiction imposes them. If a dispatch was requested in error, cancel it in the product immediately. The cancel control is on every incident, and it reports honestly whether the stand-down actually succeeded. If it says the cancellation failed, assume responders are still on their way and call your local agency.

6.Drills

Test the system only through drill mode. A drill exercises your notification chain and produces a report, and it never reaches an outside agency. Do not stage an incident in front of a camera to see what happens, and never use a real or replica firearm to test detection: the people who respond to what your staff report cannot tell the difference. If you need a prop firearm on site for a play or a training exercise, configure a suppression window for it rather than working around the system.

7.Exports and share links

Incident exports are intended for responders, investigators, and your own records, and should reach an authority unaltered. Share links are for someone who needs to see one incident right now; anyone holding one can see the site address, the frames, and the names of staff in the timeline, so treat a link as you would the incident itself. Do not publish detection frames of identifiable people, do not post them to social media, and revoke a link when it has served its purpose.

8.Security research

Do not run penetration tests, load tests, or vulnerability scans against our systems without written authorization, and never against another customer's account. Good-faith research reported to security@optiarms.com is welcome and is not a breach of this policy. Give us a reasonable period to fix an issue before disclosing it, do not access or retain data belonging to anyone else, and we will not pursue you.

9.Reporting a violation

If you believe someone is using this service against this policy, tell us. Misuse of dispatch or a camera pointed where it should not be goes to legal@optiarms.com, and anything about the security of the system goes to security@optiarms.com. Include what you saw and when. A report about your own organization's use is treated in confidence.

10.Enforcement

Where we can, we will tell you about a problem and give you a chance to fix it. Where the conduct endangers someone, misuse of dispatch above all, we may act immediately. We may also act where the law requires it.

Our responses run from asking you to change a configuration, to requiring a written undertaking, to suspension, to termination. A suspension stops the account from growing and does not stop detection, which is set out in what a suspension does. Termination does stop it. Neither entitles you to a refund; see the billing terms.
